Gandhara was an ancient kingdom in the Pothohar Plateau and Kabul and Swat river valleys, where eastern Afghanistan and northern Pakistan now sit. The Kingdom of Gandhara lasted from the Vedic period (c. 1500-500 BC) to the 11th century AD. It was a center of Buddhist culture, attaining its height from the 1st to 5th century under the rule of the Kushan Kings.
