Carved from black stone, a royal couple seated back to back, both in ankle length robes, the male with a bird in hand, the bottom of the base with inscribed cuneiform. As the creators of the world's first written language, the Sumerians where the first to achieve a more sophisticated way of life such as agriculture, architecture, the baking of breads and the brewing of beer. Kings were buried in tombs inside the large complexes built by the Sumerians and some experts believe the Sumerians may have invented the wheel.
